Interviews! An exciting and somewhat daunting event we experience during the job application process.
It is great opportunity to show off your skills and experience, face to face with a potential new employer. This can involve assessments, light conversation and sometimes the odd out of the box question, where you find yourself comparing your personality to a versatile supermarket item or loyal animal.
In the wonderful world of technology that we live in, employers are now conducting interviews via ‘Video Calling’.
Now you don’t have to be on the same level as Spielberg or Tarantino, but like any other interview preparation is key! Here are a few things to consider before you go online:
- Familiarise yourself with your device
Whether it is a laptop or a tablet, make sure you are aware of the functions and how they work. Consider the placement of the microphone and the camera, and also be sure that the device is fully charged
- Go over your script
Like you would for a face-to-face interview, prepare what you are going to say and compose a list of questions you would like to ask.
- Dress to Impress
First impressions count! Video calls are usually made between family and friends where you can wear whatever you want and they would still love you. However, with a potential new employer, wearing a fluffy onesie perhaps won’t get you the job of your dreams. Dress professionally, avoiding bold patterns as this could be distracting on some web cameras.
- Location, Location, Location
The location where you set up for the interview is very important. We aren’t suggesting you hire out an elaborate Hollywood film set; simply find a light, quiet and tidy area that is comfortable for you to speak freely. Also, make sure you are in a position where the Wi-Fi signal is strong to avoid problems with your connection.
- And Relax!
‘There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it’ – Alfred Hitchcock
Wise words! Job searching can be stressful and sometimes the run up to the event can be quite nerve-racking. Don’t worry; just relax because you’ve got this!
